The Nature of Informatics

The Nature of Information

Information is the basis of all communication. We use information in the process of categorizing our environment so that we may understand it.

Information serves us two purposes:

  1. Conveys our representations of reality.

  2. Communicates to someone or something

Information involves other aspects as well including:

  • Semantics: content or meaning of the sign of a thing for an agent.

  • Syntax: characteristics of signs and symbols devoid of meaning. (An example of a sign would be smoking.)

  • Pragmatics: context of signs and repercussions of sign-systems in an environment.

Information technology has progressed so far that we now live in the Information Age. Almost every career field involves information technology in one way or another.

A great site that showcases modern information technology is Infoport

Also, notice the point emphasized by Prof.Rocha in class that Information is a relation which informs an agent about a thing.
